Silverfish traps are one method of controlling levels of silverfish in your home. They come in many different varieties so it is important to first understand how they work before choosing the right one for your home. Insect Glue Trap

This is one of the most popular types of trap that let you catch not just silverfish but also any type of crawling insect. They are nothing more than a piece of cardboard that contains a special type of adhesive.

The silverfish are attracted to the adhesive and see it as a potential food source but, once stuck, they cannot break free. All that remains is for you to dispose of the trap.

The good thing about this type of trap is that it works for all insects and you need not get dirty while using it.

Boric Acid Traps

These are harder to find but superior to the above product. They work in a similar way except they instead contain boric acid which is a superior insecticide and works especially well against silverfish.

Homemade Trap

Silverfish can easily climb your walls. That's because if you look closely, most walls are not completely flat but instead contain numerous pits and indentations.

However, give silverfish an extremely smooth vertical surface and they are unable to climb it. This is one reason why you often find silverfish stranded in sinks, unable to climb the intentionally smooth and often wet porcelain.

Take a jar and put some kind of bait in it. Something sweet like a little bit of cola or something starchy will do. Make the outside rough so that they silverfish can climb it. One way is to use duct tape or masking tape. Leave several of these out overnight, especially in corners and other areas that contain small cracks and gaps.

Silverfish are nocturnal so by the time morning rolls by you should have collected several.

Alternatives To Traps

Traps are a good way to kill silverfish without having to pursue them and making a mess in the process. Unfortunately, you will never persuade an entire colony of silverfish into your traps and there will be many more lurking elsewhere and multiplying all the time.

Traps should be combined with an effort to make your home as inhospitable to silverfish as possible. This means keeping moisture to a minimum. It also means cleaning your floors regularly (they will even eat hair!) and keeping paper out of sight.
